Bernie Malloy
Founding Partner
I'm a "hands on" contractor with over 40 years of experience, during which I have fostered a talent for innovative ideas and a creative eye for design and construction detailing. I've orchestrated and supervised projects as diverse as office buildings, land developments, multi-million dollar homes, and a major reconstruction effort in St. Thomas following hurricane Marilyn.
I spend many hours reviewing and working through the assembly and building of a home - long before a shovel breaks ground. This allows me the ability to thoroughly understand the complexity and intricacy of the building process. Through pre-construction meetings with our trades-people, I'm often able to resolve issues before they become problems.
Each custom home brings its own unique challenges and rewards. Thinking and working through issues, whether they be design, structural or site-driven, and helping people create their dream home is very rewarding. That reward is what drives me.

I use my accounting degree to supervise the company’s financial and administrative matters.
The experience I've gained as a member of the board of directors for several non-profit organizations including The American Red Cross, helps me in my vision of the 'big picture' and in developing long-term goals for the business.
Brightleaf has never been just about the destination. It has also been about the journey to get there. That philosophy has earned us the reputation that we enjoy today.
We are a family of builders running a successful business - not business people trying to be builders. And I’m in charge of keeping the boys in line.

Cory Malloy
Partner/Master Builder
I graduated from the State University of New York with a degree in business management. I soon realized, however, that building was where my heart was. I joined Brightleaf Development in 1998 and am now the Managing Partner for Brightleaf Customer Care, our division for renovations, home repair, and maintenance.
I'm also proud to have earned the prestigious North Carolina Builder Institute’s Master Builder accreditation. Brightleaf’s Unlimited License is one of the very few that is amended to show the “Master Builder” Certification.
Growing up in the construction industry and working with many of the various trades I’ve developed a great respect for the effort and talent each trade delivers to the project every day. I also appreciate what it takes to bring cohesion and leadership to a team of artisans enabling them to perform at their utmost and create truly custom homes of the highest quality.

Shane Malloy
Partner/ Green Construction Expert
After nearly seven years of living in Europe, I realized that “home” was where my heart was, thus I joined the Brightleaf team in 2008. And, as we soon found, my fluency in both Spanish and German became an asset.
I serve our clients by being “boots on the ground” as well as “information in the cloud” therefore everyone is consistently informed regarding the progress of the construction as well as the decisions being made.
I’ve also come to see the partnership a home has with a family’s environmental health. Through this passion, I've earned certification for Advanced Green Building through the National Assoc. of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Green Building Conference. I'm also the force behind Brightleaf’s (Federal) Energy Star and (North Carolina) Healthy Built Home Certifications.
Construction today concentrates on how a house performs as a whole: using efficient heating and cooling technologies along with insulation and building envelope systems. We also employ the use of engineered lumber as much as possible to give greater strength and stability to the structure. That’s why we put so much energy into staying up-to-date with the latest in construction sciences.
